Dear Families,

I hope you have a wonderful Halloween celebration this weekend with your child(ren)!  I know it may look, sound, and feel different from previous years, but I know you will make the most of it as a family.  I'll be thinking of you all and am wishing you a spooktacular experience!

Thank you to Ryker's Mom for sharing this adorable photo!  What a creative costume idea!  I love popcorn :-)

Spirit Day & Halloween Walk About:
Thank you to all the students and staff who participated in our spirit day by dressing up in orange, black, and purple.  It was so nice to see everyone actively participating and getting into the Halloween spirit!

We had an absolute blast on our walk about admiring and honouring all the blowups, and door/wall decorations displayed throughout Byng school.  Ask your child all about it!

We loved decorating our very own door too (see Payton and Carter in front of it).  The school was truly a sight to see and be part of!  Check out all the photos below!!

A special thank you to all the classes for participating and helping make this event so special for us all to enjoy!  The work that went into decorating doors, pumpkins, and the walls of Byng is appreciated.  Nighthawks rock!!

Payton & Family:
Thank you Payton and family for providing a large pumpkin for each class to decorate and display for our Halloween event.  Your time and generosity is appreciated!

Clara & Family:
Thank you Clara and family for providing small pumpkins for every child in our class to decorate and take home for Halloween.  We had fun painting a face on them and they turned out great!!  The McKee's efforts and kindness is valued as always.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Math:
This week, we started a new unit called 'Geometric Reasoning.'

In this unit, students will learn about:
  • the geometric properties (e.g., faces, edges, vertices, angles) of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes and objects, and how they are connected
  • congruent (same size/same shape) angles, lengths and faces of objects
  • the relationship between millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres
  • how to measure accurately using an appropriate unit
  • measure and construct polygons
To get our minds thinking and working on these concepts, students explored using pattern blocks (various polygons) to build designs with them and identify the different angles in their creations!

Take some time over the weekend to discuss this math with them (work was sent home in the agenda today with a positive math mindset paper too).

As a follow up, ask your child to look for different angles (acute, obtuse, right angles) found within your house and backyard :)

Language:
This week, we started a unit on grammar and punctuation.  I will be introducing one grammar rule a week and we will practice using this skill.

Our focus this week was on learning about the subject and predicate in a sentence.  Learning about this has really enhanced our sentence building skills already!

Students completed 3 activities which came home in the agenda.  When you have time, please review the grammar rules with your child to help solidify their skills.  For example:  Write a sentence.  Circle the subject.  Underline the predicate.

Next week, our focus will be on learning about the 4 Types of Sentences (statement, question, command, and exclamation).

Science:
This week, your child came home with their bean plant that they've been growing at school with Mrs. Johnson!  Students have been enjoying their science classes as they get to do experiments and complete follow up labs.  It's been a great experience for them!

We have many plant enthusiasts in our classroom!!

Halloween Art:
As you will have noticed, your child brought home two pieces of Halloween art!  It's a pumpkin and vampire folding surprise which we really enjoyed creating!  We were inspired by the videos below and carefully followed the step by step procedure.

Below, I have posted 2 videos that your child(ren) may wish to try at home as they celebrate Halloween at home tomorrow!

Lilia & Family:
As shared in last week's post, students wrote a message of gratitude to someone special in their life.  Not only did Lilia do this, she went above and beyond to show her appreciation and support for our school's music program.

Lilia wrote a bucket filling note to Mr. Morin sharing how much she enjoys his music classes and donated $130.00 to our school to help purchase more ukuleles.

When Lilia presented this to Mr. Morin, I could feel his emotions and sensed he was holding back tears.  What a tremendous act of kindness!  I know Mr. Morin and our school's music program will cherish this gesture for years to come!!  Thank you, thank you!

Ryker & Ryan:
Thank you Ryker and Ryan for sharing these AMAZING BOOKS WITH ME!!  You both know me too well :)

Susan Verde and Peter Reynolds are one of my most favourite authors and now I can share these with our class family as well!  The messages in these read alouds are so meaningful and I know we can and will benefit from these mindfulness strategies!

Mindfulness:
Below is an inspirational story of one boy's Halloween.  Ethan Smallwood a 7 year old from Clarke's Beach, Newfoundland is a big fan of superheroes.

One year for Halloween, he didn't look to the Avengers or the Justice League for inspiration.  Ethan was inpsired to dress up as Terry Fox after learning about him at school.  Instead of getting candy, he collected donations for the Terry Fox Foundation.  How amazing!!

Watch this inspiring story of this EMPATHETIC boy's journey to help make a difference!

Growth Mindset:

"Instead of it's good enough, try thinking, is it my BEST WORK?"
Miigwetch,
Miss Gill
