Dear Families,

Earlier this week, we had our first snow day of the school year.  I hope everyone remained safe on the roads as you commuted to work.  I was thinking of you!

I am so proud of my students who took the snow day to continue their learning at home by accessing Google Classroom.

Please note, I will be posting 'Learn at Home Activities" for your child to work on during inclement weather days (bus cancellations).  It is my responsibility to do so.  This work will not be strenuous, just tasks that your child can complete independently to help reinforce learned concepts :)

Below, you will find Noah, Ben and Lilia who enjoyed completing the 'Mystery Number' task and brought it to school to share with me.  Great work you three!!  Your initiative and responsible ways are valued!!

Of course if your child is at home on a snow day,  I want them to be active and enjoy playing outside too.  This is very important to me as well :)

I fondly remember doing this as a kid because when the busses were cancelled, I always stayed home because I was a busser.  My Ma would love seeing my brother and I build snow forts and playfully have snowball fights :-)  It was the BEST!  So I do encourage being outside as well!

Grinch Day:
Thank you to ALL the students and staff (sorry I only had striped socks) who dressed up for our GRINCH SPIRIT DAY!!  It was so nice to see everyone's attire to help celebrate this character!  I was very impressed with the creativity put into this day!  We had so much fun!

Check us out below :)

Grinch Art:
During period 5 and 6, students enjoyed making a cartoon version of the Grinch by following a step by step guided drawing.  The pieces turned out great!

If your other child(ren) wants to take part in this, I've posted the video below!

Ben:
Thank you Ben for bringing in your copy of the Grinch to help celebrate our special day!  I read this aloud to the class as they coloured their art pieces.  We enjoyed learning about the author's message!  I love reading to the kids!!

Monday's Music Class:
I apologize for this last minute request, it was just brought to my attention at the end of period 6.  Please have your child dress up in red, green, and white for music class on Mon. Dec. 7th!  Mr. Morin (and Mrs. Teeter) has been working hard with the kids on a special holiday song using the boomwhackers and I will be recording it.

We are really going to miss not having you (families) come in to watch as we traditionally have in the past with hosting a Holiday Concert in the gym.  But as always, we are going to make the most of this experience and have a virtual concert and enjoy watching it in class similarly to what we did for the Remembrance Day virtual assembly.

Character Recognition:
November’s character trait was Courage – “We do the right thing, even when it’s difficult.”  Congratulations to our recipients Gavin and Taylor!

I am so proud of you both for striving to be the best you can BE in and out of the classroom.  Continue on this path, and you’ll succeed in all that you set out to do!

“There is within each one of us a potential for goodness beyond our imagination for giving which seeks no reward, for listening without judgement, for loving unconditionally.”

December’s Character Trait is EMPATHY – “We think about the feelings of others!”

Math:
This week, student's worked on a variety of math word problems using the 4-Block Problem Solving Method.  I have posted one below for you to discuss with your child.  Ask:  What strategies did you use to solve?

"Miss Gill's class has its own garden.  The class was given a new seed to plant in the garden.  The students observed that the plant grew 3cm each day.  The plant stopped growing after 10 days.

How tall was the plant after the 4th day?  How tall will the plant be after the last day?  Explain your thinking using pictures, numbers, and words!"

Your child's completed math sheets will come home next week for you to see more closely and celebrate their achievement in this area of mathematics :)

Language Part 1:
In class, we have had many discussions about ways that we can make a positive difference in our school, home, and community.  The students are really understanding how their thoughts, words, and actions can impact others.  It is up to us to maintain our POSITIVITY and ensure we're putting forth OUR BEST!

In writing, students listened to the book The Dot.  As a culminating task, they answered the following:  How can you make your mark this school year?  How will you make a difference in grade 3?

The kids' responses are heart-soaring!!  We spent quality time working on this writing task and you (parents) will have an opportunity to see your child's finished product when we're done working on them in class.

Language Part 2:
Here's an exciting initiative which I can't wait to participate in with my students!  Our class will be joining in on the 'Holiday Happy Mail' Program.  What is it?  The mission is to bring joy to the elderly by distributing handmade cards and written letters.

There is an epidemic of loneliness among our elderly.  Every day, many seniors are spending what are supposed to be their golden years in long-term care homes with little or no connection to the outside world. Many leave their rooms for only meals and medical appointments.  Many have little family left, or have families who live hours away and don’t visit often.

The seniors who move into long-term care facilities have to leave their homes, beloved pets and close friends.  We often forget that seniors are a vibrant, valuable part of our communities with so much knowledge that can be shared with others.  We’re here to remind seniors of that, one kind act at a time.

In this age of screens and instant communication, we often forget the power of a handwritten note. Who wouldn’t love to receive a kind, personalized card complete with original artwork and a handwritten message out of the blue? You have the power to brighten a senior’s day with just a few minutes of your time by creating a handmade card that will be hand delivered to a senior in a long-term care facility.

My class will be excited to begin their letter and card writing for a senior at Sunset Manor which is located in Collingwood.  We will begin these next week!  It will be a very meaningful writing activity as students are demonstrating this month's character trait: EMPATHY!!  We are thinking about the feelings of the elderly :)

Action for Happiness:
We're on a roll in our class by showing our empathetic ways!  I'm sure your child came home excited to share our kindness challenge for this month!!  Now more than ever, we NEED EACHOTHER to help uplift our spirits as we continue to face this unprecedented time.

Thank you to the students who are already actively engaging in the suggested acts of kindness provided in the calendar!  I really enjoyed some of the kind gestures you've already completed!!

For me and many others, the holiday season is an excellent time to stop, think, and reflect upon all the wonderful ways we can spread JOY, PEACE, and KINDNESS for not only our loved ones, but also for those who need us the most who may not have a hot meal or warm place to rest at night.

Together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of others!

Enjoy taking the DO GOOD DECEMBER challenge with your family!

Clara:
Thank you Clara and Mom for sharing the wonderful growth of your bean plant!!  WOW, it's happy to be in your home :)  Mrs. Johnson and I are so proud of your efforts and sharing your love for science!

Kaylee & Miss Gill:
How adorable is this!?  Kaylee and I happen to have the SAME OUTFIT in our closets!  Yep, I'm a KID AT HEART parents!  Can you tell?!

Thank you Kaylee for making MY DAY!  This is a memory I'll always fondly remember from this school year :)

Grammar Rule #6:
This week, we continued learning about plural nouns by adding "S," "ES," or "IES."  The students are getting the hang of this even though there are so many different rules!

Please ask your child about the rule and what letters to use to change the various singular nouns to plural.  I think you'll be impressed!  We also talked about the various irregular nouns that we have in our language too.

To help consolidate this grammar rule, we played a KAHOOT which was interactive and fun as always!

Mindfulness:
What can we do to make this holiday season better for one and ALL?  Watch this video to get inspired!  We all have it in us to give :)

Growth Mindset:
Thank you to Jamie for sharing this week's growth mindset with us!  I love when my students' contribute to this weekly tradition!  Keep it coming boys and girls!  Next week, I'll be sharing Lily's mindset quote :)

"Instead of I've tried 1 strategy, try thinking, I CAN UES A VARIETY of strategies to do it!" - Jamie

Miigwetch,
Miss Gill
